Nepal

Nepal, a federal democratic republic is a landlocked country bordered by the People's Republic of China to the north and Republic of India to the east, west and south. Occupying only 0.03% of the world's land and 0.3% of Asia, it offers immense diversity in terms of ethnicity, language, culture, geography and biology. Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, etc. co-exist. This diversity renders ample possibilities for tourism. The country is home to four UNESCO World heritage sites: two each in the natural and cultural category. With an area of 147,181 square km, the country is divided into three physiographic regions– the Himalayan region in the North, the lowland/Terai region in the South and the hilly region in between.

The Himalayan region of Nepal contains eight of the fourteen mountains higher than 8,000 meters shared across a border with China or India, including the highest peak in the world– Mount Everest (8,848 meters). The region is a haven for adventure seekers, popular for activities such as trekking, climbing, mountaineering and others. The Himalayas are also the origination point for glacial lakes and rivers that are like veins of the country, nourish all lives. Whitewater rafting in rivers like Koshi, Seti, and Karnali, to name a few are quite popular. Sherpas, Manangis and other ethnic communities indigenous to the region preserve a rich culture with their own unique traditions and folklore. The hilly region nurtures much of the national biodiversity, protected by national parks and wildlife reserves. Cultural treasures spread across from east to west adorn the hills of Nepal. The UNESCO world heritage site inscribed Kathmandu Valley alone has seven monumental sites from the medieval period, often dubbed as the golden era of the country. The enlisted UNESCO World Heritage sites are Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Changunarayan Temple, Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath, and Swoyambhunath (Monkey Temple). Additionally, there are hidden gems across the region for aficionados of nature and culture. The southern plains or the Terai region is regarded as the granary of Nepal. The Chitwan National Park and Lumbini–the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, the “Light of Asia” are a few popular destinations here. Besides these, Bardia National Park, Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve are some of the places where you can enjoy wildlife safari and simply have a rendezvous with nature.
